I read in the article that up until 1900, there were two state capitals in Rhode Island; Providence and Newport.

From what year (sometime before 1900, apparently) did Rhode Island have both Newport and Providence as its capitals?

Newport and Providence were joint capitals from 1854 to 1900. Before 1854 there were 5 capitals, one in each county. - Engels 02:54, 15 Sep 2006 (PDT)
