I visited an old match factory in Sweden (birch trees) and heard a story of how a visiting Japanese dignitary visited the same factory many decades earlier. in his formal attire, his top-hat fell into the vat of liuid used as the tip of the match. The swedish host apologized profusely and the Japanese gentleman respectfully stated that he simply leaned over too far and 'accidents do happen'. Upon the return to Japan, the hat was submitted for experimental analsis and the exact chemical formula was dupliocated and then japan became a big player in the world match industry.
