Chretien Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes - Comments
From LoveToKnow 1911
Per Pierre Grosclaude, Malesherbes, témoin et interprète de son temps, Paris, Libr. Fischbacher, 1961, the 1911 EB is wrong on one minor point and one possibly more important one. His avenue of trees was at Malesherbes: the writer here was possibly confused by a type of cherry tree called arbre de sainte-Lucie. More importantly, he did not "retire to Switzerland", he retired to Malesherbes; he merely visited an ill daughter in Switzerland.
This came up on Wikipedia in the course of work on our corresponding article. A French contributor provided the correction and citation; she had a few other citations to back this up, including Arthur Young, travels : tome 1, page 182 (French edition) on the location of the avenue of trees. - Jmabel 12:41, 14 Aug 2006 (PDT)
