The evolution of the British Cabinet to its present day form began in Earnest after the Glorious Revolution of 1688. William of Orange strengthened the existing parliamentary practices by introducing a cabinet that was composed solely of ministers drawn from the party which enjoyed majority in the House of Commons. This streamlined the administratioon which was earlier subject to frequent derailment due to incompatibility of political views within the cabinet.During the reign of Queen Anne, the practice of dismissing unpopular ministers came into being. The Parliament and indeed the cabinet reigned supreme during the Hanoverian Era. King George I who was the Elector of Hanover did not know english and hence did not attend the Cabinet meetings or the parliament sessions. This caused the parliament to weild the powr of legislative and the executive. The Whig party remained prominent during the reigns of both George I and George II who likewise did not understand english. Under the leadership of thee eminent parliamentarian Sir Robert Walpole, the Whigs remained in power for almost half a century and this period is known as the Whig Oligarchy. Sir Robert Walpole introdused many reforms in the parliament which are still followed. He made the ministry collectively responsible to the House of Commons and introduced the practice of resigning the entire ministry once the party lost majority in the parliament.
